Logging Scene

Artist Carl Arneson was born in 1877 to Norwegian immigrant parents in Sumner Township, Barron County, Wisconsin. As a young man, Arneson worked in the logging camps of Knapp, Stout & Company in northwestern Wisconsin.

The 1900 census shows Carl as a farm laborer living with his parents and siblings in Sumner.

The Wisconsin Historical Society possesses a letter from Arneson which details which expereiences and this painting.

Arneson explains that this scene depicts a late 19th century logging crew (Knapp, Scout) working in the northern woods of Wisconsin. Since Knapp, Scout & Company closed its camps in 1900, the scene in the painting probably dates to the late 1890s.
