Art of the Draw: Advertising Posters
from the McCormick-International Harvester Collection
HISTORY POSTER
Presence of the Past
his poster is based on a huge,
360-degree painting of the Battle of Gettysburg done by
Paul Dominique Philippoteaux in 1884. It shows Union
artillery on the left and infantry on the right rushing
to defend against Pickett's charge. The reaper,
interrupted in mid-harvest, is a mid-1880s twine binder
transported back into an 1863 scene. The placement of
contemporary products into historical scenes has become
a staple of modern advertising.
