Decorating with Ribbons

Decorated by Sidonka Wadina-Lee, 1991

Sidonka Wadina-Lee of Milwaukee learned from her Slovakian grandmothers how to paint and embellish eggs with colorful ribbons. The ribbons, symbolizing eternity or eternal life, are used to string eggs together so that they can be hung from walls during the Easter season. The decorative colors have meanings as well: purple represents royalty, faith, and trust; red represents passion, happiness, and the sun; and orange represents hope and endurance.
