Additional Information: | 2002 - This two-story home that once exhibited the Queen Anne style rests on a brick-clad foundation and is sheathed with vinyl. The basic roof form is that of a gabled ell with a six-sided turret and a hip-roof porch located in the southeast ell juncture. The porch is open and it shelters a small entry covered with modern sheet siding. A flat-roof addition is attached to the rear (north) elevation. The house's only notable ornamentation are partially projecting gables occupied by half-moon windows. Other fenestration generally consists of one-over-one, double-hung sashes arranged singly or in pairs. The first level of the main (south) carries a replacement picture window with transom. Fred Schmidt had this building constructed in 1902. Born in 1862, Schmidt was the president of the Schmidt & Storck Wagon & Sleigh Company, which was organized in West Bend in 1892. The company consisted of a six-building complex on the Milwaukee River (no longer extant) that manufactured wooden and, later, steel wagons. In fact, Schmidt obtained a patent for a steel-spring wagon. By 1931, the company had switched to making caskets and was the forerunner of the West Bend Casket Company. Schmidt lived to 1941; however, the house remained in the Schmidt family into the 1950s. It remains today as a private residence. |
