Additional Information: | Architectural remnant of 1851 Dheins Hotel 2015: Dhein’s Hotel is a c.1915, one-and-one-half-story, side gable bungalow (AHI No. 92721) with stucco-covered masonry walls resting on a stone foundation. Asphalt shingles cover the gable roof, which features a central brick chimney, exposed rafter tails, and large gable dormers centered on the front (east) facade and rear (west) elevation. The dormer and gable ends are clad in wood shingles. An enclosed gable entryway is positioned slightly off-center on the front facade, accessed via concrete steps. A shed roof ell extends on the rear elevation and a secondary entrance is located on the south (side) elevation of the ell. Windows are one-over-one, double-hung, replacement sash with plain surrounds. Comparison with a historic photograph of the stagecoach inn on this site (Collection of WHS) indicates that the stucco-clad lower story of the present residence is a remnant of the inn, constructed prior to 1870, which originally had a frame second story that contained a large dance hall. The property also contains a number of outbuildings associated with the hotel, constructed by founding settler Philipp Dhein, as well as Dhein’s dairy farm, which occupied much of the adjacent undeveloped land. A c.1850 livery stable (AHI No. 230525), historically associated with the hotel, has a dry-laid stone foundation, clapboard siding, and a gable roof covered in asphalt shingles. A pair of board and batten double doors is centered on the north elevation, while the south elevation has been altered with the addition of three modern overhead garage doors. A c.1870 bank barn (AHI No. 230526) is located west of the house and stable and has a rubble stone foundation, vertical board siding, and a gable roof covered with wood shingles. A shed awning spans the east elevation of the barn between the basement level and haymow. A monolithic concrete silo is located adjacent to the south end of the barn. Two smaller outbuildings located between the house and barn have rubble stone foundations, vertical board siding, and gable roofs with asphalt shingles. |
