Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Open air market consisting of a brick shed and 154 roofed stalls. West Allis' first market was established in 1918 in the triangle of land bounded by Greenfield, National, and 65th. When market volume increased to a level that created traffic problems, a new market was planned for the present site. A large hill on the site was removed with dynamite to provide the gently sloping grade down to Lapham St. The present building was constructed at a cost of $25,000 and dedicated on 5/9/1931. Previously surveyed in 1980, update photograph submitted in 2007. |
