Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Previously surveyed in 1980; address then identified as Mineral Street. This school stands three stories high. The facade has a pair of entrances each trimmed with a heavy stone surround and set within a Tudor archway. A multiple light transom tops each of the doors and the area above the entryways consist of three, tall and narrow windows that have been covered by a translucent material. A two-story semicircular wing extends from the near east end of the school and exhibits a continous band of sash windows along the first floor while the basement level contains paired sash windows. The rest of the school has symmetrically arranged sash windows grouped in bands of seven, placed in pairs or single. A modest parapet runs along the top of the structure. Stepped areas are located above the entrance bays while a shaped example lies above the two-story, windowed wing and contains a stone inset inscribed "ROOSEVELT SCHOOL". The west addition was added in 1923 and exhibits slightly different styling than the West Allis schools constructed during the mid-to-late 1920s. The school was closed in 1997. The school immediately preceded a significant school building program in West Allis and represents a notable part of the educational history of West Allis. |
