CAR BARNS FOR THE ELECTRIC TROLLEY LINE FROM MILWAUKEE. Although West Allis was traversed by rail lines as early as 1854, the first street cars (horse drawn railwya) appeared some 20 years later. Regular transportation did not arrive until after 1890 when electricity was perfected to serve as the power source. By 1891, the National Ave. street car line had been extended from Milwaukee to the Soldiers Home east of West Allis. There was considerable debate over whether the line shoud be extended on National Ave. and thus connect the Town of North Greenfield or to cut west on Greenfield Ave. to the Fairgrounds. The availability of good transportation was one of the most important factors in Allis-Chalmers' decision to locate their new plant in West Allis. Previously surveyed in 1980; no longer extant per 2007 survey. |
