Additional Information: | 2017 The Montello Theater is a one-story, rectangular plan theater constructed c.1885. The walls are clad in stucco-covered brick and rest on a stucco-covered foundation. The gable roof is covered in corrugated metal. The front (north) facade features a c.1975 concrete block false parapet with a dentilled cornice. A pent roof overhang covered with asphalt shingles features a wide projecting clipped gable that serves as the theater’s marquee. The lower story of the front façade is clad in vertical wood siding and the main entrance consists of a pair of modern replacement doors flanked by a small double-hung replacement window. The main ticket window on the east side of the front façade contains modern vinyl sliding sash. A vinyl-clad, gable roof addition extends from the rear (south) elevation. The east and west (side) elevations each feature narrow window openings with peaked headers; these openings have been covered with wood. According to the 1894 Sanborn map of Montello, the property previously functioned as the community’s opera house. (1) |
