Additional Information: | Previously surveyed in 1975. The main block of this gabled ell form house is likely the house that Randall built in 1841. It has a two-story rectangular plan with a low-pitched gable roof and returned eaves. The walls have been covered with vinyl siding and the symmetrical fenestration of the main block is filled with replacement sash windows with decorative shutters. In the gable peak, there is an unusual pyramid shaped opening with small lights. The main entrance is enclosed with a modern door the entrance is covered with a modern porch that has a hip roof supported by modern turned posts and a modern wooden post balustrade. The form and massing of the house, along with the returned eaves, suggest the Greek Revival style, but other style details have been covered over or removed. A one-story ell projects from the east elevation of the main block. It was probably added some time after the main block. It is also covered with vinyl siding and features modern sash windows decorated with modern shutters (2004). This house appears on the 1858 plat map for Shopiere as the residence of J. H. Randall. According to local history sources, Jared Randall built the first frame house in Shopiere in 1841. Randall was an early pioneer and was a partner with Louis P. Harvey in operating both the grist and saw mills in Shopiere. (Brown, p. 678, Guernsey & Willard, p. 128) |
