| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This circa-1855, stucco-sheathed house is comprised of a two-story, side-gabled main block; a rear, one-story, gabled wing (1876 or earlier), as well as a 1966, one-story, one-room addition to the south. The entrance elevation is symmetrically arranged with a central door that is fronted by a circa-1900 porch and two, one-over-one-light windows that flank it to either side. A series of five, one-over-one-light sashes occupy the second level and are located throughout the remainder of the house. An image of the home is included in the 1876 Milwaukee County plat book. Although not always an exact depiction, that 1876 image indicates that the windows of the home were originally multiple-light sash examples, which would be consistent with its Greek Revival styling. This house was built circa 1855 by German immigrant Leonard Herbst, who purchased the land in 1848. He and his wife Barbara had four children: Margaret, Anna, John and Mary. Herbst was a lifetime farmer. The house remained in the Herbst family into the 1990s. |
