STONE LINTELS AND SILLS RETURNED EAVES ROUND WINDOW IN GABLE
2019 City of New Berlin survey recommendation write-up:
This Greek Revival-style, gabled ell house is comprised of two wings; one that rises two stories and is constructed of coursed stone with heavily mortared joints, while the side-gabled wing is one-and-one-half stories in height and constructed of brick. Partially obscured by foliage, the front-facing wing features a wide wooden cornice and modest return eaves. The street-facing, two-story elevation consists of three, six-over-six-light, double-hung sash with plain stone headers and sills. The gabled ell wing, which also features a wide wooden cornice, is fronted by a hipped roof porch that is partially enclosed with brick, while a carved wooden support divides the remaining space that leads to the home’s entrance. Like the main block, windows are six-over-six-light examples with plain headers and sills. A glass-enclosed porch extends off of the rear of the house.
The initial block of this house was built by Philip Stahl circa 1855. Philip Stahl was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1844, along with his wife Catherine and three children, as well as his father John. Philip Stahl appears to have purchased land in New Berlin Township as early as 1846, ultimately owning and farming a total of 80 acres. As of 1850, the Stahl household included Philip, Catherine and six children. Catherine died in 1863, and Philip remarried the following year and he and wife Mary had one son, Ferdinand. In 1875, Stahl sold the land, which included the house, to neighbor Frederick Graser and the Stahls moved to Milwaukee. Philip died in May 1889. Based on information provided in the 1995 survey report, the brick wing may have been added in 1879 and, therefore, it would have been added by Graser.
