NOTES
Additional Information:Caspar Albrect designed this example of old-world architecture with wood-carvings, parquet floors and hand-wrought iron fixtures to replicate the Kohler family home in Bregenzerwald, Bavaria.

Austrian architect Kaspar Albrecht designed the Chalet style Waelderhaus, or “House in the Woods” (Riverside Drive West, just south of Parkway), completed in 1931. Marie Christine Kohler commissioned the building, based on the Austrian childhood home of her father, John Michael Kohler, as a meeting place for Girl Scouts. The two-and-one-half-story side-gabled building is constructed of squared timbers joined with dowels and pegs. Flowers cascade from the window boxes of an enclosed second-story porch down to a lower porch. Iron balconies, a wooden stair railing cut out in a decorative pattern, and a large carving of a lyre add to the fairytale-cottage look.
