Additional Information: | Included on the property is a ca. 1930's front gable, clapboard sheathed garage, as well as an associated cemetary. St. Mary's Catholic Church was established as early as 1854 and a wooden church was constructed soon thereafter. That church was replaced by the present brick building when it was dedicated on 22 November 1893 with a membership of fity-six families. It cost $10,000 to build. By 1913, the church was in a state of disrepair with broken windows and peeling paint when a new priest was assigned rector. The church was eventually improved upon and it merged with St. Nicholas of Dacada, St. Patrick's of Adell, and St. Mary's of Random Lake to form the present day congregation called "Our Lady of the Lakes." The central steeple stands in good condition and all the upper-level, pointed arch fenestration is original and displays a high degree of ornamenation. However, the church exhibits a later side addition, as well as a gabled dormer, both of which detract from its original form. As a result, key characteristics of the Gothic Revivial style, such as its steeply pitched roof and basilican plan have been adversely altered. |
