Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. An example of a Late Picturesque house, this design follows a formula employed by builders in Waukesha in the last decade of the nineteenth century. The building is two stories with attic, rests on a cut stone foundation and is asymetrically massed. In this instance the building is L shaped with the front elevation on one plane (rather than the gable end projecting) and a gable roofed unit projecting to the south. The building is sided with clapboards, with the exception of sawtooth shingles in the gables and a fish scale band between the first and second stories. Other ornamental details appear in the gable (bargeboards with chiselled patterns) and on the front porch (composed of turned posts, spindlework and simple railing). The Beggs house is considered to be a contributing building in the College Avenue Historic District because it is a fine example of Late Picturesque design. The design is a somewhat less complex design than 215 W. Laflin Avenue (WK 37/13) and is an important component in the College Avenue Historic District. Beggs owned and operated a hardware store at 920 Clinton Street which is a pivotal structure in the Downtown Historic District. Resurveyed: "Architecture/History Survey of S. East Ave," WisDOT #2718-12-00 & 2718-11-00, Prepared by Heritage Research (2011). |
