Additional Information: | 330 Dahl Street Giles S. And Anna D. Coon House This two-story, clapboarded, frame vernacular house was built circa 1897 for Giles S. Coon (City of Rhinelander tax rolls; Vindicator, July 14, 1897, and October 1897). Coon (1851-1918) was one of the early residents of Rhinelander, arriving in the new settlement in 1882. He had the Rapids House Hotel built (demolished circa 1917) and managed it in cooperation with Charles Chafee until at least 1891. He and Chafee operated a lumber company together around 1895. Coon was sole operator of the lumber company, through which he apparently also sold real estate, from at least 1897 until his death. He was also a major proponent and tireless lobbyist in the creation of Oneida County, and the designation of Rhinelander as county seat, which happened January 1, 1887. Coon lived in this house from the time it was built until at least 1914 (Rhinelander City Directories; City of Rhinelander tax rolls), and probably until his death. |
