Additional Information: | 405 Dahl Street Morris and Lena McRae House This one-and-one-half-story front-gabled frame vernacular house is clad with wood shingles and has a mix of six-over-one and diamond-pane-over-one, double-hung sash windows (reminiscent of medieval or Colonial quarrels). The house probably was built by and for contractor Morris McRae (and wife Lena) circa 1913, and originally looked very much like the house at 116 East King Street (which see), with a cutaway front porch. Between 1920 and 1929, the cutaway front porch was enclosed for then owner, Fay Marshall (1920 and 1920 Sanborn Map of Rhinelander). Morris McRae was a carpenter/contractor active in Rhinelander from at least 1897 to at least 1927 (Wisconsin State Gazetteers; Rhinelander City Directories). He may have been the son of Rhinelander pioneer carpenter/contractor, Alex McRae, a Scotsman by birth. The Tudor Revival enclosed entry porch with steeply-pitched roof on the front of the house appears to date from circa 1940. |
