NOTES
Additional Information:20-22 West Davenport Street Elks Club
This two-story, Art Deco building was erected as the clubhouse of the Rhinelander chapter of the
Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks in 1932. Selmer and Company of Green Bay were
the contractors ("Elks New Home Dedicated," New North, November 19, 1932). Although the
storefront has been altered, the second-story is striking, finished with glazed red brick, enriched
with streamlined pilasters capped with carved black stone capitals, a black coping, and a stepped
black ziggurat above the entrance with a black-and-white panel that reads: Elks Club. The
Valley First National Bank remodeled and expanded into this building in 1986 (City of
Rhinelander building permit). The Elks moved out of the building around 1940, and were
succeeded by the Rhinelander Veterans of Foreign Wars. The two storefronts housed the Model
Market Grocery, and the Village Inn Cafe, from at least 1936 until at least 1960 (Rhinelander
City Directories). This is a fine local example of Art Deco commercial design, and retains good
integrity.
