NOTES
Additional Information:803 South Keenan Street Herbert and Emily Samways House This one-story, hip-roofed, brick vernacular house was built by masonry contractor Herbert Samways in 1899 (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 415). It features segmental-arched window openings with brick rowlock lintels, and a polygonal side bay. The enclosed, clapboarded front porch, and gabled dormers probably date from the 1910s (City of Rhinelander tax rolls). Samways (1861-?) was born in England and immigrated to the U. S. in 1879, settling in St. Louis. There he studied to be a mason. Samways moved to Rhinelander in 1888; his first work in Rhinelander was on the W. E. Brown House at 9 East Frederick Street (which see). Samways was an active mason/contractor in Rhinelander until at least 1927. He lived in this house until at least 1927, and retained ownership while renting the house out until at least 1940 (Rhinelander City Directories; City of Rhinelander tax rolls). This is a good local example of a brick vernacular house, with good integrity, but is not distinctive enough to qualify for listing on the National Register for its architecture.
