Additional Information: | Charles H. Ormond, a veterinary surgeon, had his office in this building and owned it in 1893. Constructed between 1876 - 1885. 1893 alterations and additions by Charles Kirchoff, Jr. This two story brick Italianate building, with hoodmolds and projecting cornice, is one of a few remaining buildings of its scale and type in downtown Milwaukee. Rascher's Insurance Map of 1876 shows an amendment (the map was updated periodically to 1885) of a row of eight two story brick cased dwellings at this address. By the 1890s, city directories also list offices in the building, probably on the first floor. During its history, the structure has housed a variety of businesses, including a hotel and restaurant and tavern. In 1893, when Schlitz Brewing Company purchased the building, the second story corner bay was added and the "partitions, doors, and floors" were altered. The first floor facade has been subsequently altered to the detriment of the structure's architectural character. |
