Additional Information: | Builder was Adam Ploss. Rear addition was constructed in 1953. Ploss was originally from Bavaria and arrived in Menomonee Falls in 1856. During the second half of the 19th century, Ploss was engaged in diversified projects ranging from fine cabinetmaking to designing and building structures. Some of these structures in town include the 1860 brick school, the Keeler/Martin Hotel built around 1862, and the Coates and Ostrander General Store which was built in 1860. He also made furniture for the Masonic Lodge, carved the eagle which graced the Eagle Hotel, opened a sash and door factory with John D. Berringer, applied for a sewing machine patent, and produced patterns. Jesse Price also occupied the house in 1888 while J. Marx also occupied the house in 1891. The upper stories were also utilized as millinery, tailor and shoe shops. Asam's Tailoring Shop was housed here at the turn of the century. In 1903, Ploss agreed to transfer his property to Sadie Baer, who had resided with him for a long, but unspecified period, with the stipulation that he be allowed to reside and maintain his shop there for the remainder of his life. After Ploss died in 1910, Mrs. Baer transferred the property to the Gettleman Brewery. From at least 1920-1940, Wisconsin Gas and Electric owned the building. R.H. Bleck added the garage in 1953 and this replaced a wooden porch. The original front porch was removed sometime between 1910-1925. The interior of the house has been remodeled for contemporary retail use. |
