NOTES
Additional Information:A brick veneered two story frame Victorian commercial building that has a flat sloping roof. Corbelled projecting window cornices and a bracketed metal cornice influenced by the Italianate mode of Victorian architecture extending around both street facades characterizes the building. The storefront has been recently altered and a frame extension has been added at the rear. An exterior, decorative iron stairway gives access to the second floor. Although this building is not architecturally excellent, it is important visually to downtown Shullsburg because it occupies a prominent corner in the middle of the Shullsburg commercial district. This building also known as the "Cash Grocery" has played a significant role in the development of Shullsburg's commercial district. Andrew Hebenstreit went into the grocery business in 1863. It is believed that his grocery and residence on the second floor was in this building. John Hebenstriet, his son, took over the business after his father's death about 1880. In March of 1903 Hebenstreit purchased the property and some property East to the Rupnow Law Office (LT 8/31). Hebenstreit continued the business many years. It is now AKM Electric Shop, run by A.K. Miller.
