Additional Information: | A two story brick vernacular Victorian commercial building with a flat sloping roof that has stepped back side walls. An elaborate projecting metal cornice with lintels and bracketed ends and round arched window frames decorate the front facade. Denticulated brick work extends across the facade underneath the cornices. The significance of this Victorian structure makes it visually important to the commercial district. It is a good example of a Victorian commercial building, probably one of three best examples of Victorian architecture in brick in the downtown. This building has had a significant role in the development of Shullsburg's commercial district. During the late 19th century this building was a hardware store known as the C.J. Meloy's Hardware. In January, 1903, after the Pick and Gad offices burned down the previous month, the second floor became the newspaper's temporary offices. About 1910 Ed Roy took over the hardware store and his son, E.E. Roy had his dental office on the second floor. The building was bought in 1921 by the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges and continues to serve as their lodge home. The Pizza Joint is located on the first floor. |
