Additional Information: | A frame vernacular Victorian two-story that combines a hip roof with projecting front and side gabled bays to achieve the multiple projections popular in picturesque houses of the period. A chambered corner on the west side, a small porch at the upper level, and a two-sided porch with pedimented entrances and turned support posts add additional elements of irregularity to the compositon. Cut shingles decorate the gable ends. Shingles also are arranged in a horizontal band across the center of the facades, emphasizing the structural division of the two-story in a fashion similar to the house at 541 N. Judgement. The best example of a frame vernacular Victorian house in Shullsburg, this house ia also significant because it is one of three remaining houses known to be the work of the local physician/architect C.C. Gratiot. In addition, the house was designed by Dr. Gratiot for his family where they lived until 1919. |
