Additional Information: | "This building replaced a structure that caused one of Hurley's disastrous 1887 fires. Built by the Gogebic Meat & Provisioning Co. to replace their original building, this impressive structure is actually a wooden building with a single layer of brick skin. This veneer was applied to many of Silver Street's buildings between 1887 and 1920, often due to a city ordinance passed after one fire that prohibited new wood buildings on Silver Street. Since they had to be shipped in from elsewhere, bricks were expensive in Hurley, so most buildings were only veneered in brick, not built of them entirely. In the 1920s, and 1930s, this became known as the Lincoln Hotel, a hotel and rooming house for visitors and single residents."
