"Built by Joseph McRaniels, this bar was also a hotel -- in 1942, McRaniels Hotel had 10 rooms for transients. McRaniels appears to have gotten out of the hotel business by the end of World War II. McRaniels was the only non-Italian tavern owner in this block, but people of several nationalities had bars on Silver Street." Iron County Heritage Area, Historic Touring Guide & Map to Iron County: Wisconsin's Vacation Paradise, not dated.] According to a relative, Joseph McRaniels name was Guiseppi Ranieri, and he was in fact Italian. |
