Additional Information: | This factory was built sometime between 1915 and 1926 as the Watertown Milk Producer's Co-operative Association's pasteurizing plant. Little is known about the factory except that its name suggests a farmer's cooperative effort to market their milk. The plant today is operated as a canning factory. This building has some historical interest as a milk processing plant constructed during the era of dairy expansion in Wisconsin. It represents both the expanding market for local farmer's milk in the early twentieth century, as well as the new processing technology that allowed fluid milk production in large factories. This plant, while of interest in the history of dairy production is not individually significant. One of the few extant historic industrial bulidings in the city of Watertown, the Canning Factory building has retained a fair degree of integrity and exhibits some architectural interest. However, as one of the group exhibiting moderate architectural character, this building is not an architecturally significant example of industrial architecture. |
