Additional Information: | 2001- "This 65' limestone Midsummer Carnival Column consists of a square pedestal upon which rests a tall, unfluted Corinthian column topped with a large, round ball. Designed in 1900 for the Milwaukee Midsummer Carnival Association by noted architect Alfred Clas, this sculpture originally featured a metal dedication box underneath the column's shaft and a metal eagle perched atop the ball. The eagle was thought to reference the eagles found over the entrance of the nearby Milwaukee Public Library (814 W. Wisconsin Avenue), which was completed in 1897 and designed by the architectural firm of Ferry and Clas. Both the eagle and metal dedication box were removed from the sculpture in 1942." - "Marquette Interchange, Milwaukee", WisDOT ID #1060-05-02, Prepared by Heritage Research (McQuillen) (2001). 2017 - The Midsummer Carnival Column is the middle of three statues/sculptures located in the median of the 900 block of West Wisconsin Avenue (the Court of Honor). The limestone sculpture is 65 feet tall and consists of a tall Corinthian column atop a square pedestal base. The column is surmounted by a smaller pedestal that supports a stone ball. |
