Additional Information: | M in the photo codes is short for MVIS. February/March 2003-This one-story, brick building is topped with a low-pitched, gabled roof and is oriented on a north/south axis. The primary (north) façade is punctuated with segmental-arch window openings with circa-1950s sashes, while other openings have been boarded over. A circa mid-1940s structure with modern sheathing is located to the west. As noted on the HAER inventory sheet, the Grant, Breese & Co. Marble Works was established in circa 1890 and moved into the Menomonee Valley in 1898. Two brick buildings designed by Julius Heineil were erected; this property was a mill building, while the other was a warehouse and office building. The company made finished marble ornaments and sculptures, as well as supplied marble for both the interior and exteriors of buildings. The firm also sold rough marble. In circa 1918, the company was renamed for its owner James J. McClymont, who had served as president since 1913, after William Grant had left the business. Shortly thereafter, the former warehouse/office building (now 2615 W. Greves) was utilized by the Seamless Steel Products Co. and then the Dunham Manufacturing Co. The subject mill building west of the 27th Street viaduct was retained by the marble works. However, by circa 1940, the McClymont firm was taken over by the Milwaukee Marble Works. And by no later than 1944, the Theile Tanning Co. occupied the subject structure, the company of which still retains ownership of the building. 2016 - resurveyed, appearance unchanged. |
