Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Resurveyed in 2023 by UWM-CRM as part of a CTH A reconstruction project. St. John’s Evangelical and Reform Church was built in 1888. The church is rectangular in plan, with a front tower and a polygonal chancel at the east (rear). The church has a fieldstone foundation, is clad in vinyl siding, and has a modern asphalt shingle roof with aluminum eaves. The front tower contains an arched recessed entry with modern steel entry doors. A pair of round-arched stained glass windows and a single stained glass rose window are located above the front doors. The lower portion of the tower is capped with a pent roof. The upper belfry portion of the tower contains paired round arched openings with louvers The belfry is capped with a steeply-pitched roof with flared eaves. The uppermost eaves retain their historic scrollcut brackets. Four tall round-arched stained glass windows are located in each of the side elevations. Small gabled entry additions are located in both the north and south elevations, and an additional flat-roofed addition is located along the north side. The seven-sided polygonal chancel contains several pointed arch windows as well as a single round rose window. The chancel is flanked by low hip-roofed sacristies. The building contains several modern entry modifications, including a concrete ramp at the front and a pressure-treated wood staircase on the rear. Photos of the interior from 1994 suggest that at that time the church retained its original modest Gothic Revival-style interiors, with painted plaster walls, pressed metal roof, and decorative wood altar and reredos. |
