Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION: This two story Gothic Revival house has a cruciform plan topped by steep cross-gables. Segmental-arched windows contain two-over-two double-hung windows with curved tops. A small round-headed window is located in the attic story. A one-story bay protrudes from the south facade. A concrete columned one story porch with a flat roof traverses on the main facade. A picture window has been installed next to the entrance under the porch. Although the eaves have wide overhangs, they are not ornamented with bargeboards. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE: This is a good example of a brick Gothic Revival residence. Steeply pitched gables and segmental-arched windows are significant features. The house is also significant in that it retains a large lot, an important reminder of rual Brookfield Junction. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The 1873 Plat Map lists "S. Dolf" as owner of this property; three structures are noted on Dolf's property facing the railroad tracks at the north end. On the 1891 Plat, a structure is clearly marked in this location belonging to "George Dolph." The 1870 census lists three Dolph's: Frank (34), George (25) and Simon (61), all farmers from New York State. It is probable that George Dolph built this house sometime after 1873; a stone hitching post with the name "Dolph" inscribed in it stand before the house. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Dolph family have been associated with this property since the era following the Civil War. The B in the photo code stands for BKFD. Another map name is City Engineer 10-1-92. |
