Additional Information: | Square mansard roofed entrance tower in angle of house; two sided front porch with dentil trim supported by Ionic columns; enclosed rear porch; projecting wooden pediment shaped window heads; three sided bay window with bracketed eaves and dentil trim. This was the home of William Sproesser, a jeweler between c. 1902 and c. 1911 and Otto Winkenwerder, a hardware merchant, between c. 1915 and at least 1930. Sproesser took over his father's jewelry store business in 1868. He was a talented singer and musician besides being a jeweler and also a successful businessman. He was involved in the Globe Milling Company and the Merchants Bank. Otto Winkenwerder was a proprietor of Winkenwerder Hardware. Winkenwerder Hardware was begun by Henry Winkenwerder in 1860. The store was moved to the Schempf Block around 1890 when it was consolidated with the branch store of the Kusel Hardware business. The hardware store operated until the mid twentieth century. This house has some historical interest as the home of William Sproesser and Otto Winkenwerder, two merchants in the community. William Sproesser was an important businessman in Watertown, but his residence at 907 Clyman St. probably best represents the height of his career, since it was constructed especially for him in 1913. Otto Winkenwerder was a successful merchant, but whose career is not individually significant. Therefore, this house probably does not meet the criteria for National Register eligibility. |
