Additional Information: | Hipped roof two-story frame (now sided) that has a square columned full length porch which gives a horizontal emphasis to the rather square heavy-appearing house. This house is important for its association with John Fleming, a prominent citizen of Shullsburg. John Fleming was the sixth child of ten children of Irish immigrants who immigrated to Seymour Township in 1854. John Fleming farmed with his father until 1895. He moved to Shullsburg that year and engaged in the coal, feed, and seed business.(C) He was a member of the school board for 24 years.(B) In 1926 he succeeded W. H. Wiley as president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank.(C) He also served as mayor of Shullsburg for two terms, 1916-1920.(C) |
