Additional Information: | The S.A. Steele building was erected circa. 1925-1930. Little more is known about this building. Siding added to facade; contemporary storefront. Because little historical data is currently associated with the building, its role in the development of Sparta remains unclear. It is therefore currently historically insignificant under Criterion A. This commercial vernacular brick building has been altered by the addition of vertical siding to the upper part of the facade and by the addition of a contemporary storefront. Originally this one-story building had windows on the upper part of the facade to light the attice space. This building was constructed in 1927. It was built for S.A. Steel as a "modern business structure" for rental property on the site of Steele's old blacksmith shop. The shop, reportedly built 81 years before the construction of the new building, was torn down. The Steele Building does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because of a lack of integrity. |
