Additional Information: | Wooden rear one story addition; arched windows with brick voussoirs on rear and side elevations; triangular shaped wooden door; window heads on main block; partially screened porch with dentil trim and square posts. This was the home of Rudolph Koenig, an important miller, between c. 1885 and at least 1907. One of the larger mills at the turn of the century in Watertown was the Egale Mill. It began as the City Roller Mills, later changing its name to the Watertown City Mills and the Eagle Mills. The Koenig family operated the mill [no longer extant] which was located at First and Wisconsin Streets. This house is significant for local history under National register criterion B because of its association with Rudolph Koenig, one of the Koenig family operators of the Eagle mill. Milling was an important industry in Watertown, beginning with the small mills of the pioneer era, to several large mills of the turn of the century years. The Eagle Mills was an important mill at the turn of the century, but unfortunately the building is no longer extant. Because Rudolph Koenig was associated with this mill and this was his long time home, this house is significant for local history. This house doe snot meet the criteria of the NRHP for archiectural significance because of a lack of architectural character as well as a lack of integrity. However, this house has sufficient architectural integrity to meet the criteria for historical significance. |
