Additional Information: | Store front with refractive glass transom windows over clear plate glass and recessed entrace; leaded glass window; corbelled brick trim along top of facade; arched raised brick window heads with corbelled brick ends; residential quarters on south side. This building was the long-time location of meat-markets. Between 1872 and 1900, it was the Richard Steinberg meat market. By the 1920s, the building was the location of the Fendt Brothers meat market and commission house. The building is still the location of the Fendt Meat Market. This building has historical interest as the long-time location of a meat market. The individual firms are not significant, but the building contribute to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historic District. Built around 1875 for R.E. Steinberg to house his meat market and his residence, this large cream brick block has a storefront on the north side of the building and residential quarters on the south side. Having retained the raised brick arched window heads and a storefront in keeping with the historic character of this simple vernacular building, the Steinberg Meat Market has suffered minimal alteration. A series of flat and gable roofed small cream brick and wood buildings in an L-shape are located at the rear. The Steinberg Meat Market and residence is a commercial vernacular building characterized by raised brick, arched window heads associated with the Italianate style and a raised brick cornice. Although this building is a fairly well-preserved example of 19th century commercial vernacular architecture, it si less elaborate than other examples. However, the Steinberg building built around 1875 contributes to the historic character of the proposed Main Street Commercial District. |
