Additional Information: | This building was bulit during the early twentieth century for the Andrew Roegner granite and marble works. In the 1920s it became the Odger-Block and Woelffer granite works and finally the Watertown Memorial Company. This building has some historical interest as a marble works. It is not individually historically significant, but does contribute to the development of industrial-retail commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historic District. Originally constructed as a granite and marble works in the early 20th century for Andrew Roegner, this one-story red brick building was remodeled and enlarged to its present appearance between 1915 and 1926. Characterized by a flat roofed belvedere, the facade of the original building on the north end of the structure is divided vertically by applied brick pilasters with wide windows topped by flat, white masonry lintels located in the bays. White masonry water table and foundation further characterizes the building. The south part of the facade added during the 1920s remodeling project exhibits a facade of polished granite and stone veneer. The cream brick north side elevation features various sizes of arched windows and brick voussoirs and accomodations for ventilation and for machinery necessary in the memorial business. An early 20th century red brick vernacular building, the Andrew Roegner Granite and Marble Works has no particular style or significant architectural character. One of two marble works extant in the commercial district (also see Archie Bros. Marble Works at 218 First Street [62-32]), the Roegner Marble Works contributes to the historic character of the Commercial Historic District. |
