Additional Information: | Shed roofed one story rear wooden and brick addition; arched brick windows with brick voussoirs; enclosed wooden flat roofed porch. Previously surveyed in 1986 with map code 42/4 on City Engineer Map A. The first known occupants of this house were Leonard Franke and Alva Soldner in 1924. City directories list their occupations as laborer and woodworker respectively. From 1924 to 1955, the house had numerous occupants including Edwin A. Kasten, a feed grinder with the Globe Milling Company, who resided in the home from 1934 until at least 1955. From a descendent of Spohn: "The records indicate that the first known residents were Leonard Franke and Alva Soldner in 1924. I have U.S. and WI census reports along with Watertown City directories that show my maternal second great grandmother, Marie "Stephania" Kehr Spohn resided in the home prior to that time period. According the the US Census reports in 1880,1900, and 1910 and the WI Census report of 1905 and the Watertown City directories in 1895 and 1897 show proof of her residency at 800 Third St. She was widowed in 1876 and during her time in the home worked as a seamstress and landlord to tenants in the home. The 1900 US Census shows her as owning the property. She died in 1911. She had no significant in the role of history in Watertown but it's nice to credit her as a long time resident at that address." 2023 - Changes include modern replacement windows, vinyl replacement siding, infilled window openings, and front porch modifications/enclosure. |
