NOTES
Additional Information:The S.A. Pond house, situated on high ground overlooking the Sugar River, is an architecturally significant example of the Italianate style in Green County. Built of red brick and rising two stories, the house is distinguished by its tall and narrow windows, segmental window hoods, low pitched hip roof and wide eaves supported by intricately carved scroll-shaped brackets. The front entrance is framed by engaged fluted columns, sidelights and a transom, and the side entrance porch retains the original open lattice-work supports, connected by arches. Although the original cupola and balustrade have been removed, and the front porch altered, the house still retains integrity as an elaborate mid-century residence.

S.A. Pond came to Albany in 1846, at the age of 16, in the company of his father who erected a saw mill and opened the village's first store. In 1849, S.A. Pond started his own business, selling drugs, books, and general merchandise. Until he left for Janesville (c. 1880), Pond remained one of Albany's leading citizens, and his Italianate residence was not only the village's most elaborate, but one of the most imposing in Green County. The house was built by 1861, when it appeared illustrated on a county map (and probably five years before).
