NOTES
Additional Information:Smith & Perkins was the builder. K. Gehring was the mason. Good example of a brick triple-decker flat with integrity of form and appearance. This is an unusual building type in Milwaukee. This structure is a fine example of a small walk-up type apartment building. It is one of the few remaining in this area. Previously surveyed in 1984 with map code of 137/32 on a map labeled 393. Resurveyed as part of Milwaukee Downtown Connector Arch/History Survey (2010), Prepared by Heritage Research. 2010: Rising three stories from a brick foundation, this largely vernacular brick apartment building is topped by a corbelled cornice and brick chimney. Irregular in shape, the building features a three-story, four-sided bay that extends on the southeast cornerof the building. Windows typically consist of one-over-one sashes or single-pane openings topped with segmentally-arched, raised-brick hoods. A modern brick stairwell leading to a modern entrance is located on the west facade. Constructed in 1896, this apartment building was desinged by H.B. Wheelock and built by Smith & Perkins. K. Gehring was the mason. 2021 - This Commercial Vernacular apartment building was constructed of cream brick in 1896. The three-story walk-up apartment building has a raised foundation and a flat roof. The basement level is separated from the first story by a raised cornice band formed simply by three brick stretchers. Prominent features of the building include a corner bay that extends the full height of the building, a corbelled cornice above the third story, and segmental arched brick hood molds. When found in pairs, window hood molds share the center corbelled support. Windows at the basement level feature carved stone sills and arched soldier brick lintels. While original window openings have been maintained, the sashes throughout have been replaced with one-over-one double hungs. The main entrance is located at the northwest corner of the building at the top of a short flight of stairs.
