Additional Information: | Photo codes: OUT/FRV 4:10A, 11A. See HAER form. NAER INVENTORY (06/1980): "The Flats," is a 2 story red brick apartment building. It has a gabled roof and segmented areched windows. The foundation is limestone and the floor plan is rectangular. The building measures 28 x 100 feet. The building is attractive and is in good shape. The building was built by Edward Becker in 1876 as the City Brewery, producing soda water and beer. The brewery averaged about 500 barrels a year. In 1899 Bernard Becker bought the business from Edward. He went into partnership in 1903 with John Herter. This partnership lasted until 1911, when Becker again became the sole proprietor of the bottling plant. In 1913, he went into partnership with a Mr. Steingraver. At this time the bottling plant was called the New London Bottling Works. The brewery went out of business in the late 20s. Sometime in early 30s the building was made into apartments for renters. It installed plumbing in the 30s by instruction of the city. The current owner is Greg Hatfield. |
