Additional Information: | A 'site file' titled "Hortonville Downtown Historic District" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. SINCE THIS TRIPLE STORE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR FORM BUILDING WAS FIRST SURVEYED IN 1977 ITS ORIGINAL THREE FIRST STORY STOREFRONTS HAVE ALL BEEN MODERNIZED. THIS BUILDING WAS RESURVEYED AND REPHOTOGRAPHED IN 2004 IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SEC. 106 SURVEY OF STH 15 (FORMERLY STH 76) WisDOT #6430-06-00) AND IS A CONTRIBUTING RESOURCE IN A POTENTIAL HORTONVILLE DOWNTOWN NRHP HISTORIC DISTRICT THAT WAS IDENTIFIED BY JIM DRAEGER IN 1999. SANBORN MAPS SHOW THIS TRIPLE STORE BUILDING WAS BUILT PRIOR TO 1894. This two-story building features a facade that is organized into three identical units that are divided from one another by full-height pilaster strips. Each unit originally features a full-wodth first story storefront that had a centrally placed recessed entrance that was flanked on either side by a display window, a three-bay-wide second story consisting of three segmental-arched window openings, and each unit was crowned by a nearly identical corbelled brick parapet wall that was capped by a decorative metal or wood cornice. The first story storefronts of these three units have now all been replaced by a single continuous modern one that does not retain any historic elements. Most of the second story window openings are intact as well as the upper decorative elements. |
