| Additional Information: | Sanborn-Perris maps show that this one-story Twentieth Century Commercial Style brick-clad building was built between 1922 and 1933 as a meeting hall for the Modern Woodsmen of America, a fraternal benefit organization. Since that time the building has been remodeled for use as a store and it now houses an auto parts dealer. 1995- "Modern Woodsmen of America Hall (now Motor Parts and Equipment-GMC), VE25/9. Sanborn maps show that this one-story rectilinear plan Twentieth Century Commercial style-influenced building was constructed between 1922 and 1933 as the meeting hall of the Modern Woodsmen of America, a fraternal benefit organization. The building has a very plain design; walls are clad in brick over building tile and the only ornamentation is the repeated pattern of slightly corbeled brick that encircles the main south-facing facade and the east-facing side elevation just below the cornice. The only other design element of note is the recessed main entrance, which has side walls clad in glass block, a Moderne style element that may have been a later addition to the building. The very plain design of this building makes it an unlikely candidate for individual inclusion in the NRHP and most of the windows have been altered as well. In addition, Jim Draeger of the SHPO did not include this building within the preliminary boundaries of the proposed Viroqua Downtown Historic District. Never-the-less, the possibility exists that when revised boundaries for this district are drafted, this building may yet be included within them." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
