Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Late Picturesque house was built as a single family residence in 1877. The owner, J.J. Nelson was a prominent busniessman. In 1931 it became the Sunset Hotel. From 1955 to the mid-1960's it served as a nursing home. Today it is again a hotel. Though the building has been greatly altered twice, it remains a prominent Amherst landmark. 1903 portion designed by Fred Webster of Ripon.
