Additional Information: | Old lumber mill. Commercial vernacular building with a cream brick exterior and segmented window heads. This old planing mill is a one-story brick building with a raised gable-roofed cupola over the east half of the building. The building has cream brick walls punctuated with segmentally-arched openings, most of which are boarded up. In a few places where the openings can be seen, they are fileld with multi-light sashes. Along the north wall at the east end of the building there are several entrances filled with wooden doors. These are also topped with segmental arches. The south wall of the building has similar openings. At the turn of the twentieth century, Waupaca had three major lumber mills, all with planing factories. Processing northern Wisconsin timber was one of the city's most important historic industries. Through demolition and fires, most of the city's lumber industry resources have been lost. Although this building is in poor condition, it is a historically important resource related to an important past industry. |
