Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION The Lindenwood school consists of an older gable section and a post-World War II modern school addition. The older section of the house has a steeply-pitched gable roof with a plain cross piece in the gable peak. The large gable is also decorated with wood shingles. A prominent cornice runs under the roof eaves and is raised above the inscription painted in the cornice frieze. The inscription states "Lindenwood 1899". Windows are two-over-two light double-hung sashes. A set of two windows have been placed where the old front entrance to the building once exisited. The large modern addition is constructed of brick with large single pane windows and small window openings underneath. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE While not as elaborate as the Thoreau School on Mequon Rd., this building is constructed around the same time and has picturesque details like the crosspiece and wood shingles. The school building is in fine condition with only the front entrance modified. The large modern addition sits at the back of the building and can be easily seperated from the historic structure. Because the Lindenwood school is a good example of small schools in Mequon, it is significant for achitecture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Lindenwood School was on of the district schools that served rural population of Mequon. Mequon has a number of school districts before the consolidation movement of the 1960s made such small schools obsolete. it survived a little longer than most because of modern addition, but eventually was closed in favor of larger, newer schools. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE It is among a group of historic small school houses that date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Mequon. These buildings are resorces that contribute to the early development of education in Mequon. |
