Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. The C. A. Spencer House is a two and one-half story Queen Anne style house with an irregular plan, a hip and gable roof, clapboard siding, and wood shingles in the gable peaks. Openings are largely single light sashes. A two and one-half story bay projects from the west elevation. The main entrance is covered with a porch that features turned posts, brackets, and a decorated gable. The Spencer House has some architectural interest as a good example of the Queen Anne style. In 1936, the house was purchased by two local doctors who converted it into a hospital. Only one other formal hospital had been developed in the city, but this was a small facility that developed into a clinic. The hospital in the Spencer house, known as Mirror Lake Hospital, operated in the city until the modern Riverside Memorial Hospital building was built in 1955. Because it was one of the important facilities in the growth and development of the modern hospital in Waupaca, the Spencer House is historically significant. |
