NOTES
Additional Information:Open porch on east wing with turned posts; rear addition; flat stone lintels; off set entrance into main T block; brick cornice and brick cornice returns in gable ends. This was the home for cooper Andrew Zickert between at least 1866 and 1885. Zickert was a German immigrant who came to Watertown in 1857. He began his cooper shop in 1864, probably at this location, since he was here in 1866. Zickert was one of the long-term coopers in Watertown. This house is significant for local history under National Register criterion B and C because it was the location of the home and shop of Andrew Zickert. Barrel-making was an important pioneer industry in Watertown, when many items that were later manufactured in quantity in large factories were built locally at small shops. Although barrel-making never reached the factory proportion in Watertown, the long-time barrel-makers contributed to the development of small industry in early Watertown. For this reason, the Andrew Zickert house and shop is significant for local history, meeting the criteria. This house does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because of a lack of architectural integrity. However, this house has sufficient architectural integrity to meet the criteria for local significance.
