Additional Information: | Mansard roof, porch, brackets. Three different families and a fraternal order once owned the Second Empire style home that originally stood in this spot. James Meiklejohn built the home for his family in 1878. He lived there until 1889 when George Strickland became the owner. The last homeowner was AG Meiklejohn from 1900-1914. At the time of purchase, AG was the mayor of New London. He removed the veranda on the west wide and a wider one was added to the west and north sides. He also added four large plate glass windows and a new furnace. In 1914, the New London Lodge No. 131 of Free and Accepted Masons purchased the house to use as their Masonic Lodge. In 1980, due to rising costs, the Masons tore the lodge down to build an apartment building for low cost housing. |
