Additional Information: | The Buckstaff complex consists of three and four story structures, clad in metal siding and covered by low pitched gable roofs, and connected by a raised walkway. Windows in a number of buildings are paired and contain 6/6 lights. The drying room, a three story brick and stone structure, is located in the center of the complex. The Buckstaff Company had its earliest roots in the saw mill industry starting with a shingle mill in 1865. In 1866 a saw mill was added. In 1882 the company was reorganized and started manufacturing chairs and, in 1883, caskets. At that same time the plant moved from W. Fifth St. to the present location. It was one of the leading casket makers in the midwest in the late 19th century. This company is one of the few remnants of the once dominant lumber industry in Oshkosh. It is the sole surviving furniture factory from this era |
